Further Considerations in the Design of Decimators and Interpolators

چکیده
In this paper several issues concerning the design and implementation of multistage decimators, interpolators, and narrow-band filters are discussed. In particular, the question of designing these systems in terms of minimum storage rather than minimum computation rate is examined. It is shown that a design which uses finite impulse response (FIR) filters for each stage, and which is minimized for storage is essentially minimized in terms of computation rate as well. The problem of further improvements in designing decimators and interpolators by taking advantage of DON'T CARE frequency bands is also discussed. For the early stages in a multistage design it is shown that fairly significant reductions in filter order can be achieved in this manner. A third issue in the design process is the question of practical schemes for efficient implementation of multistage decimators and interpolators in both hardware and software. One such efficient implementation is discussed in this paper. Finally, the problem of designing multistage decimators and interpolators using elliptic infinite impulse response (IIR) filters is discussed. It is shown that multistage IIR designs can be somewhat more efficient computationally than single-stage designs; however, the storage efficiency of the multistage lIR design is worse than that of the single-stage hR design.

Scaling and Roundoff Noise in Multistage Interpolators and Decimators
In this paper we present novel methods for scaling and roundoff noise calculation in multistage interpolators and decimators. When a signal is upsampled by L it becomes Cyclo-Wide-Sense Stationary (CWSS) which prevents the use of common design algorithms for scaling. When a signal is downsampled by M the situation is simpler since the stationarity is preserved, however, that case will still be ...

In this paper a general theory of multistage decimators and interpolators for sampling rate reduction and sampling rate increase is presented. A set of curves and the necessary relations for optimally 4esigning multistage decmators is also given. It is shown that the processes of declination and interpolation are duals and therefore the same set of design curves applies to both problems. Furthe...
متن کاملReduced Complexity Comb-filters for Decimation and Interpolation in Mobile Communications Terminals
In mobile communications systems complexity and efficiency are issues of paramount importance. Therefore when implementing integer factor sample-rate conversion, comb-filters especially cascaded-integratorcomb (CIC) filters are a good choice of realizing linearphase filters with low complexity. However, neither the direct implementation of comb-filters as transversal filters nor their implement...
متن کاملPolyphase allpass IIR structures for sub-band acoustic echo cancellation
The advantages and current limitations of sub-band approaches to echo cancellation are reviewed. Polyphase allpass IIR halfband decimators and interpolators are presented. Their performance is compared to QMF structures in NLMS sub-band echo cancellation for hands-free telephone signals recorded in a car. The polyphase allpass IIR case is shown to give around 2 dB more ERLE with one fifth of th...
